Cleveland, Ohio Selected to Host 2009 U.S. Figure Skating Championship
Quicken Loans Arena to be the Primary Competition Venue
U.S. Figure Skating recently announced the selection of Cleveland, Ohio as the host city for the 2009 U.S. Figure Skating Championships, tentatively scheduled for Jan. 18-25, 2009. The event, held annually since 1914, is the nation's most prestigious figure skating event. Over the course of a week the event will crown 12 national champions in ladies, men's, pairs and ice dancing on the senior, junior and novice levels.
U.S. Figure Skating will work with the Greater Cleveland Sports Commission and the Cleveland Championships 2000 Inc. in hosting the 2009 U.S. Championships. Quicken Loans Arena, home of the NBA’s Cleveland Cavaliers, will serve as the primary competition venue with the historic Cleveland Public Hall serving as the secondary venue.
"U.S. Figure Skating is extremely pleased to announce the city of Cleveland as our host for the 2009 U.S. Championships," U.S. Figure Skating President Ron Hershberger said. "The city and the local organizing committee have been wonderful ambassadors for U.S. Figure Skating in the past, which has included their hosting of the extremely successful 2000 U.S. Championships. We look forward to working with Cleveland to put on a top-notch event. More than 250 of our country's top figure skaters will call Cleveland home for this important week."
This will be the fourth time Cleveland has been awarded the U.S. Championships after hosting the event in 2000, 1964 and 1940. In 2000, Cleveland set the all-time total attendance record for the event at 119,044. The mark was later surpassed by Los Angeles during the 2002 U.S. Figure Skating Championships (125,345).
"We appreciate U.S. Figure Skating choosing Cleveland as the site of the 2009 U.S. Figure Skating Championships," David Gilbert, President and CEO of the Greater Cleveland Sports Commission, said. "We worked hard to bring this event to Cleveland and will work even harder with the local figure skating community to assure it is a major success. This is one of the most significant events a U.S. city can host, and our community will rally to give it the attention it deserves."
The U.S. Championships annually attract more than 1,500 figure skating athletes, coaches and officials to the host city. Recent host cities such as Los Angeles, Calif., have reported economic impact in excess of $30 million.
Past champions of the U.S. Championships include two-time Olympic medalist Michelle Kwan, 2006 Olympic silver medalist Sasha Cohen, 2006 Olympic ice dancing silver medalists Tanith Belbin & Ben Agosto, as well as Olympic champions Scott Hamilton, Peggy Fleming, Dorothy Hamill and Dick Button.
U.S. Figure Skating is the national governing body for the sport of figure skating in the United States as recognized by the United States Olympic Committee and the International Skating Union. U.S. Figure Skating is comprised of approximately 1,450 member clubs and Basic Skills programs representing nearly 200,000 members. U.S. Figure Skating is charged with the development of the sport on all levels within the United States, including athletes, officials, sanctioning of events and exhibitions, and establishing the rules and guidelines by which the sport is governed.
